Customer Reviews and Description This 372 page long book would be good, but no more, if it wasn't for the first 40-or-so pages, which are a gem. The book covers the first 30 years of Churchill's life and the first forty pages cover his childhood. Although Churchill had a miserable childhood - his father was distant, his mother more interested in lovers than in her son, and he was bullied at boarding school - Churchill narrates his story with unsurpassed wit and without any hard feelings for the ones that failed him. Some passages, like ... Read MoreRead Reviews and Description

Customer Reviews and Description Girls Who Rocked the World 2 provides more stories of amazing girls from the past to modern times who had the courage to make history. These girls made history before they were in their twenties and include such notables as Harriet Tubman, Golda Meir, and the modern singer Charlotte Church. The biographies are lively and revealing.

Customer Reviews and Description I was excited when I saw this book with such a title. But it turned out to be one of the worst (popular math book) I have read in the last few years. Then I read the review by sporkdude on November 7, 2004 (thanks sporkdude!). He made some very good suggestions (that we should ignore all the odd chapters but a handful of pages, if not ignore the whole book at all). I gave the book a second chance, but it just once again confirmed that it's a really badly written book. I can tell you why.

Customer Reviews and Description These are the random musings of an old man contemplating his mortality. After a writing career in which he had twenty novels published, in addition to fourteen stories featuring the fictional barrister, Horace Rumpole, and twelve plays as listed in this small book of ramblings about his life, I learned that he was actually a barrister himself at the Old Bailey. He was born five years after the end of the 1914-18 war, he says, and enjoyed and endured a 'public school' education where one of his school mates was Lord Byron. ... Customer Reviews and Description Years ago, my then Zen teacher, Joko Beck, was recommending that her students read A. H. Almaas's "Diamond Heart" series. She said that his work helped her articulate the connection between the ego and the absolute. Whether or not someone wishes to pursue this particular path, this is an amazing book. Teachers often say that "we are love (or compassion, peace. . .)." Almaas helps us understand what that actually means.

Customer Reviews and Description I remember when LBJ visited Australia in 1966 and received a pretty hostile reception because of the Vietnam War, this sparked my strong interest in US history and politics. I picked up this book while on holiday in the USA to find out what made this president tick. Once started l found it very hard to put down. It is a superbly written book which makes the reader feel that they are right beside LBJ as he makes his way up the path to power. The book is the result of years of prodigious research and analysis of documents, papers, ... Read MoreRead Reviews and Description
