Customer Reviews and Description Everyone who needed to leave his/her country (no matter the reasons) and to live abroad could write a "Story of a childhood". Marjane did this work for us and her story is simply beautiful!

Customer Reviews and Description Supressed and repressed memories surface many decades later for this woman who is known for her fiction writing. I was totally blown away by the depth of feeling and sensitive way she solves a mystery of secrets from her own past. I read the whole thing in less than 29 hours, and could not put it down! I will go on and read her novels now. This book will win acclaim and sets a new standard for memoir writing....truth....nothing made-up....and only temporarily forgotten. I am glad her memories ... Customer Reviews and Description I'm still not done with Angela's ashes, and this is the only reason I've reserved a 5-star rating. Its a compelling read, and a true testimony to the strenght and resilience of a human spirit destined to succeed. This book is beautifully written and immensely funny and provokes those of us who are quick to grumble about our lots in lives, that life truly is what we make of it. Well done McCourt!

Customer Reviews and Description Michael Kazin's previous work examining late 19th century American populism serves as an ideal background to write this fascinating revisionist biography of William Jennings Bryan. Bryan, famous as a perennial presidential candidate and as Darrow's straight man in "Inherit the Wind," has never received the consideration he deserved as one of the originators of the modern Democratic Party. That is a pity one people should applaud Kazin for remedying. Indeed, Kazin capably and convincingly argued ... Read MoreRead Reviews and Description

Customer Reviews and Description I am a huge biography fan, and this is one of the best I have read. McCullough brings out the excitement, intrigue, and interest that renowned but sadly overshadowed founding father Adams deserves. McCullough chiefly takes on the role of story teller rather than critical analyzer and it fits the flow of the 700 page read well. Lucky for McCullough Adams provides more than enough stories to work with. The first 200 pages although not boring are comparatively slow to the constant action throughout the ... Customer Reviews and Description Just as a good novel has twists and turns, you will find yourself riding up and down with this book. In the chapter toward the end, I couldn't sleep or put it down till I found out where the business and Kramer wound up that day, and more importantly to me, how they made it. I was breathless on Wall Street! It was a shot of knowledge, on top of a truly great read. If you love trading, or love the market whether you trade or not, this is your novella, because it takes place deep in the world of Wall Street. ... Read MoreRead Reviews and Description

Customer Reviews and Description I was terribly disappointed with the 100 or so pages I forced myself to read. I had looked forward to reading about Maier's incredible courage and expected to be inspired as I was by Lance Armstrong's book. Maier's book fails to re-create the experience of the extraordinary event, and his miraculous return to competition. Hard to believe that a story such as this could be made tedious. It reads as though Maier dictated it into a computer program which translated and transcribed it. I also suspect they rushed ... Read MoreRead Reviews and Description

Customer Reviews and Description If you are a knee jerk PC, left winger, forget it. If you enjoy good stories, this works pretty well. Each story pairs a modern parable/retelling with the Biblical story. I found the modern parables pretty weak. At the end of each story is a series of questions and "truths". I usually found that 2 out of 5 were pretty decent.

Customer Reviews and Description I listened to this book on unabridged CD and really enjoyed it. I think most people in their teens or twenties can relate in some way to the experiences the author had, even those of us who didn't abuse alcohol or drugs. I don't think many people in this age bracket can deny the impact alcohol and drugs have had on our generation.
