Customer Reviews and Description Brian Hicks does a satisfying job in Ghost Ship in presenting all angles of the mystery surrounding the Mary Celeste and her missing crew. Particularly interesting is the author's examination of the how this true tale of terror morphed into an almost legendary event as various myths began to attach themselves to an historical occurence, starting with a story by Arthur Conan Doyle. The ship's name even changed from Mary Celeste into Marie Celeste in common usage as if in tribute to its own new iconic ... Read More |

by: Schama Simon List Price: $40.00 Amazon.com's Price: $27.20 You Save: $12.80 (32%) Prices subject to change. Customer Reviews and Description I read all 3 of Simon's books on the history of Britain. I did it because I am a history buff. However, Simon writes in a way that makes it difficult to remember anything about the book. Instead of focusing on significant historical events and figures, he weaves in alot of information and persons that are either not that relevant or difficult to place in context. I think his whole series is average at best. Surely, someone can do better. |

|
by: Miguel Leon-Portilla Amazon.com's Price: $18.00 Prices subject to change. Customer Reviews and Description First a cautionary note: I don't believe in "good" or "bad" in history. Things happen because of the complex interrelations between many factors, and coincidence (yes, it plays a role). So the worst way to read this book is from a sentimental point of view: mean Spaniards conquest and kill good Indians. Just imagine what would have happened if the human-sacrifice-prone Aztecs had conquered Spain (but then again, they had no ships to cross the Ocean). Nevertheless, this is a crucial book, because ... |
by: Richard Brookhiser List Price: $26.00 Amazon.com's Price: $17.68 You Save: $8.32 (32%) Prices subject to change. Customer Reviews and Description It is nice to see a new biography on a relatively neglected Founding Father, who has been portrayed (when mentioned at all) in other histories I have read as more or less a light-weight Good-Time Charlie. Clearly a lightweight wouldn't have been entrusted to draft the Constitution, yet Morris has been left in the corner to gather dust for the last two centuries. So a new biography is certainly welcome. It is a well-written, brisk narrative, and is enjoyable enough to read, but I cannot bring myself ... Read More |

Customer Reviews and Description Famed author Cornelius Ryan has a unique and appealing way of telling a story that makes his books quite unique, and this huge best seller is no exception. He lets the disastrous story of the wrong-headed Allied decision to risk an immense day-light paratrooper drop with "thunderclap surprise" (catching the Germans with their proverbial pants down) for the first time in the European campaign unfold as an ill-conceived effort to capture a series of bridges critical to a fast and successful prosecution of the Allied ... Customer Reviews and Description Review by Tom rederiksen - http://members.aol.com/spdtom/index.html - AZTEC STUDENT TEACHER RESOURCE CENTER: Diaz is an accomplished writer and I was impressed with his attention to detail as it related to the daily life and inter-personal relationships between the Conquistadors. This is a fairly long book but reads easily and anyone that enjoys a good adventure or mystery novel will find this an interesting book. As there are precious few first hand accounts from this time period, this first hand narrative is a must ... Read More |

Customer Reviews and Description Tom Berry has been called the "Bard of the New Cosmology" and so he is! His thoughts challenge those rooted in authoritarian structures and flatland awareness. His views challenge those who find extreme security in their myths and dogmatic positions. These people have made a career of striking back with an authoritarian thunder when challenged with a more comprehensive unfolding of the Cosmos. Berry's explication brings science and religion together without authoritative fiat rooted in dogma--what Ken Wilbur calls "Deep Religion." ... Read More |

by: PETER ACKROYD List Price: $18.95 Amazon.com's Price: $13.27 You Save: $5.68 (30%) Prices subject to change. Customer Reviews and Description What a wonderful and magical book. It isn't the normal left-to-right chronological history. It is a series of chapters that each examine a different aspect of London's character. That is why it is aptly called a biography. Rather than a sequential history we get a study of the character of this magnificent city. I have grown to love London through a series of business trips that led to a few personal trips. It would be very satisfying to be able to live in London for some period of time, I think. But... You don't need to have ... Read More |
