Customer Reviews and Description Dr. Goodwin was given what few biographers, certainly presidential ones, rarely are: access. Both working in the Johnson Administration and working with LBJ in his later years on his memoirs she had numerous conversations with this highly controversial politician. She gives a balanced reveiw, especially given that her closeness early on in her career.

Customer Reviews and Description Annie Dillard, the editor of this collection, is widely considered one of the foremost American writers of nonfiction. Akin to the sophisticated, peerless, but somewhat dry,"The Art of Fact, " a fabulous, though now somewhat-dated anthology for those journalists who wanted to expand their rule-driven pieces, these are only somewhat relevant as contemporary examples, mostly useful to the writer studying how the genre of creative nonfiction has evolved over the last century into modern-day anthologies, such ... Customer Reviews and Description This review arrives beneath the fragrant shower of the overwhelmingly positive opinions that came before it, mostly from other 'T-girls' who thrilled to find their own transgendered life experiences echoed and affirmed so eloquently by Alice. I will add my voice to theirs and repeat that every page resonates with that kind of truth. But Alice in Genderland is more than a primer for novices or a fascinating memoir from an exotic subculture, it articulates some very big ideas for world at large to digest. Transvestism ... Customer Reviews and Description When I first heard about this book, I was at a point in my life where I was looking to focus on and grow in my spirituality. I cracked open my decades old King James Version Bible and felt completely lost trying to make sense of it because it was written so long ago. We are so far removed from a time when people washed each others feet as a show of respect that this non-church going person was at a loss trying to apply 2000 year old Bible messages to today's world. So I began researching newer versions of the Bible, ... Read MoreRead Reviews and Description

Customer Reviews and Description I found Mrs. Fontana's book very honest and so real...mixed with her sadness also comes anger...of being left alone and even anger that her husband "had to be a hero"...I've read the book twice and each time, I came away with something different..anyone who has young children can relate to how overwhelmed the author felt, as her son was age 5 in 2001..how conflicted she felt over handling the aftermath of "9-11" and her political activism to preserve the memories of the firefighters who lost their lives. Mrs. Fontana was also very ... Read MoreRead Reviews and Description

Customer Reviews and Description I first read this book when I was in high school. I loved the book so much that I had to have a copy for myself. This is a very compelling story and Betty shows herself to be strong and always thinking of her daughter's safety more than her own.I think that if high school students had a chance to read this compelling story then they would understand the hardships that some Americans go through when they go to foriegn countries or marry foriegners who end up kidnapping them once they get them into their native land.

Customer Reviews and Description This book was assigned in one of my classes by my professor. She told us all it would be real easy to read once you started, and would be hard to put down. She was absolutely right. This book is full of the horrors of World War II, but also the compassion of people during the war. Based on the life of Irene Gut as a teen and woman in her early 20s, we learn of her efforts to hide a dozen people who would surely be executed by the Germans if they were found. She risks her life to protect these people, and sees the senseless violence that ... Read MoreRead Reviews and Description
