Customer Reviews and Description In Contending for Our All, John Piper continues his series "The Swans Are Not Silent". They are not stricly biographies, so if you are looking for detailed biographies on historical figures you'll need to look elsewhere. For lack of a better term, I would call them "Applied Biographies". They look at the lives of faithful figures in church history, and show what we can learn from them, and how their lives can help us understand the Christian faith and the challenges to that faith in our present ... Customer Reviews and Description I've read and re-read this book countless times in the years since purchasing it while waiting to be called for dinner one night. It isn't the traditional tale of road excess and lurid lifestyles, but instead a nicely done history of the band from its beginnings to the controversial "A Momentary Lapse Of Reason". Pink Floyd may have toured and partied as hard as any band, but even when they were at their commercial peak, these tales never seemed to find their way into the media. This may have been ... Customer Reviews and Description The authors seem to have had a very rough job while researching this book--it consists of nothing but big, big Hollywood bombs. I never thought it would be this fun reading about Battlefield Earth, Surviving Christmas, Mary Reilly and other tanks by Hollywood's biggest stars. Lots of interesting information. It's a page-turner.

Customer Reviews and Description This book is a passionate response to attacks on Pope Pius XII; it's interesting that some reviewers have tried to downplay the book by misrepresenting it. One self-important reviewer wrote this: "By the way, just who is Regency Publishing anyway? ... As someone who has written and taught about Fascist Italy and the Holocaust, I smell a rat!" If that reviewer had been paying attention, he might have noticed that the book is published by Regnery, not Regency. It's a conservative publisher, maybe not one ... Customer Reviews and Description I enjoyed this book, but I disagree that the author's experience can/should be generalized into a dogmatic prohibition of CCM for all Christians in all circumstances. The author's story was interesting and touching. However, the book is filled with sweeping generalizations that may or may not apply to someone else. Here is my take on some of the general principles the book is espousing:

Customer Reviews and Description These essays give us a rare look in to the mind of a genius. He expounds on subjects ranging from mental illness, family relationships, death and war. Sounds depressing, but an optimism shows through. Vonnegut masterfully points out the adsurdity around us and shines the light of sanity on it. The essays are as relevant and mind opening today as they were when he wrote them over a decade ago. Although this is not the Veonnegut work I would recommend to someone unfamiliar with his work, anyone will benefit from reading it.

Customer Reviews and Description Roberto Clemente's legend as El MagnÃfico, the dazzling talent, angry activist, and humble humanitarian who died a martyr, has transcended into near-mythology. Clemente's frenetic life mirrored his athletic intensity. Whether throwing curve balls on the field or to the media, Clemente's cannon arm and quick wit never failed him. It takes a towering talent to tackle a complicated subject like Clemente. Pulitzer Prize winning journalist David Maraniss steps up to the plate, and to say that the Washington Post editor hits a home run is ... Read MoreRead Reviews and Description

Customer Reviews and Description I grew up in Fresno, in the shadow of agribusiness. The story behind "King of California" is a fascinating and important one but I'm not sure this "biography" does it justice. I disliked the awkward mixture of history and journalism. Is this an expose, a biography or history? Its never really clear and the way the book is organized, around the four seasons, is particularly opaque. What does it mean to call a section, "winter?" when it is covering history spanning decades and contains interviews with living people? That said, ... Read MoreRead Reviews and Description
