Customer Reviews and Description This book took me into the grassroots level work of the newest Nobel Peace Prize winner. I was glad to get a glimpse into what the world is just recognizing as the new frontier - the hope that comes from action at the local level which makes real course changes in our world as a whole. I enjoyed the very practical outline of this movement's accomplishments and connections to the growing consciousness for earth's slow, steady salvation.

Customer Reviews and Description This book is a pessimisitic, unflattering view of pesticides and their effects on the world. Rachel Carson seems to drone for a long time about how man is killing the world, only submitting to a positive approach on 15 out of the 300 pages. Despite this overriding negative tone, the book has some very clear strengths. The book activily explores the interlocking connections of our world, connecting life, to soil, to air, to water, and all of them together. She explains those connections by the transfer of ... Customer Reviews and Description This is definitely a must read for anyone laboring under the illusion that our planetary resources are unlimited. A lot of people may be disturbed by the well corroborated fact that in 40 or so years the earth's supply of oil will be entirely depleted and that shiny Escalade will be a worthless pile of metal. Yes, we believe that we are so rich in this country, but the truth of the matter is that we're poor beyond our imaginings, to borrow a quote from the book.

Customer Reviews and Description I just got back from a one-week trip to Guatemala where I used the Howell and Webb guide which was reported as the best book by other birders and naturalists while I was there.

Customer Reviews and Description I've used LP before for trips. Once you get the book, you are invited to go on-line for up-dates. There you are directed to "The Thorn Tree" forum. I used it just about every day to keep well-informed and prepare for the trip. The guide is an easy ready and full of useful information. Prior uses were very accurate.

Customer Reviews and Description The Origin of Species, for the first time offering an adequate explanation for biological change and origins, should be required reading for anyone interested in biology, history, or life in general. Because the book outlines the beginnings of a vast, new theory, it is accessible to laypersons. It does not suffer from the esotericism of most scientific writings, which expect readers to have a working knowledge of a specific scientific idea. Darwin starts from scratch and builds up all the evidence for his theory in ... Read MoreRead Reviews and Description

Customer Reviews and Description I have to admit that before this book I was in the dark regarding the historical account of Magellan's voyage. I had no idea the trouble and turmoil that the voyage faced. With great detail and perspective, this book was hard to put down. I loved it! Highly recommended if you like great non-fiction accounts of endurance.

Customer Reviews and Description When I received Isaac's Storm as a gift, I anticipated a book with a lot of technical jargon and statistics. What I received was a story, with real-life characters, dangers, and excitement, mixed in with technical jargon and stats. The story in Issac's Storm - the many intertwining stories - make reading about the mechanics of hurricanes and weather an enjoyable experience. I loved this book and recommend it to people all the time! Now if I could just get my copy back from my friends' son, I could read it all over again!

Customer Reviews and Description I was interested in getting this book, because it is a true story, and the people in the story are relatives of mine. Balto was really the dog who saved the children of Nome. His owner was Hal Seppala, a Sami reindeer herder from Finnmark Province, Norway. Balto was named after his friend, Samuel Balto. I wanted my grandchildren to be able to read the story for themselves.
